Ryan Wilhite: “The Year of Rest”

God is always speaking to us, are you listening? I finished up a 136 acre field last week and ended up yielding, 253 bushels per acre.

The rain stopped here the first week of August and disease pressure was high. I felt led to hold off on fungicide and let God work and He did just that.

The yields don’t mean anything when it comes to eternity, but what God did here is no coincidence.

In 2023, God delayed my planting about a month later than everyone else around here. My tractor was cutting out for several weeks and no one could figure it out.

Finally the first week of May, God fixed it, it just started working out of nowhere and haven’t had an issue since.

That delayed planting led to a 40 day drought immediately after, until Dercecho hit at the end of June, bringing 120 mph winds.

I felt God had a reason for the delayed planting and to trust Him. Because of that delay, my corn wasn’t even waist high at the time of the storm.

There was no wind damage or broken stalks. That storm broke the drought and God sent 25 inches of rain to finish out the crop. The corn grew to 13 feet tall and no bends in the stalks.

All these stories grow my faith and realize how much God loves us and to live by faith and not sight. The field at my homeplace on the main highway yielded 253 bpa.

In 2024 I planted a new farm the 3rd week of April. God opened a door, but there was talk of heavy rains coming. Immediately after planting this field had over 5 inches of rain.

It was flooded and ended up having poor stands at a 25,000 plants per acre. I felt strongly that God had a plan for it and not to replant it. Every year it seems He has a miracle field and it’s always amazing to watch Him work.

That same farm got really dry towards the end of the season. It had several less inches rain than the rest of my farms, but yielded 253 bushel per acre.

That’s 3 different farms, in 3 different areas in 3 consecutive years. God doesn’t promise us a life of ease, but He does promise to be there every step of the way.

This doesn’t mean we’ll have a bumper crop every year or financial success. My life has been full of constant trials and tribulations since I started a relationship with God.

But it’s also been full of constant miracles and breakthroughs. He’s used everything for the good and refined me along the way. That’s a never ending process.

When I got the scale tickets back recently and found out that this field had yielded 253 bushels per acre, I asked God to reveal to me what was behind it.

Immediately after I found out, it gave me chills and God reminded me of how faithful He is and how much He loves us.

To get the same yield like that in consecutive 3 years, leaves only one explanation. I call it a Goincidence. It’s not about the yields, there’s a greater purpose behind every detail.

I stumbled upon Leviticus 25:3 while asking God to show me things that relate to 253 and it says “For six years sow your fields, and for six years prune your vineyards and gather their crops.”

This verse introduces the Sabbath year law, where God commands the Israelites to work their land for six years and then let it rest during the seventh year.

What’s crazy is, this is my 7th season since taking that leap of faith to farm full time. My first 6 seasons, God grew the operation, worked a lot of hours and spent so much time and energy on the farm.

I’d stay as busy as possible, only working and sleeping most of that time. Hardly anytime for friends or fellowship. God was refining me and helping me along the way, but for the first 6 season, I was stressed to the max on the inside.

I only felt peace for short periods of time even though I said I trusted God and was pretty positive on the outside.

A year ago about the time I got married, I fully surrendered and God has given me this constant peace through everything, that doesn’t make sense without Him.

Last spring, God told me to take a year off from the farm and let Him lead the way. My family and I live 3 hours south of the farm. God told me to only come back to farm during planting and harvest.

This seemed crazy to me as I like staying busy on the farm and can always find things to do. That’s also how I used to deal with the stress.

I knew I had to listen though. God told me to rest this year, focusing more on Him, my family and friends/ fellowship. So the 7th year, I’ve rested and God has made it so clear that I heard Him right.

Gods opened the doors to spread the gospel and help others like He told me He was going to do, when I started the operation.

I’ve been able to spend more time with my family, than I ever dreamed was possible and has connected me with so many amazing people.

Men’s group is every Wednesday and only 2 hours from our house. Much closer than where my farm is, so I’ve been able to go every week since last winter, outside of planting and harvest.

With all of this, I truly have felt at rest this year with a peace that surpasses all understanding. 253 bushels per acre probably doesn’t mean anything to anyone else, but God can speak to us through anything.

Find rest in the Lord and surrender everything to Him. Let the Holy Spirit guide your thoughts, actions, words and decisions.

Through every season, the delays, the droughts, the floods, the storms and the harvests, God has shown that His hand is in every detail.

The number 253 isn’t just a yield, it’s a reminder to me of His faithfulness, love, timing and perfect plan.

When we surrender our will and rest in Him, He multiplies far more than our crops, He multiplies our peace, our faith and our purpose.

God is always speaking, always have ears to listen and hearts to obey!
