Ryan Wilhite: “Faith Like Potatoes”

I read this book about a South African farmer named Angus Buchan, back in 2017.

He had many similar struggles that I went through and God used the book to change my life and relationship with God. God opened my eyes to how much He loves us and how powerful He is.

He was an ordinary man with little education, a farmer that felt God was calling him to spread the gospel. I’ve read it several times since then and it’s just as powerful each time.

One of my highlights over the years was getting to see him speak at a men’s conference down in Tennessee back in 2019.

His faith is so inspiring and his heart for God and people being saved really impacted me.

In the back of the book, it talked about being saved and then included another prayer about, allowing God to use you to share the gospel.

I prayed that prayer, and shortly after, a preacher randomly reached out asking me to share my testimony with his church.

The only explanation for that was God. The Holy Spirit lit a fire in me and God’s been working ever since.

I would encourage you to take that leap of faith and start telling people the good news!

God calls us to be disciples, planting seeds and letting Him water them. If it wasn’t for others being bold for Christ and sharing the good news with me, my life would look much different right now and I’d have no hope for eternity.

We only have so much time here on earth and He’s our only hope after we leave here.

Sharing the gospel doesn’t always mean speaking up on stage to a crowd, it can be a simple conversation with a friend, coworker or stranger.

Sometimes you don’t even have to say anything, just showing love and being a Christlike example can have a huge impact. God will open doors for conversations and give you the words to say.

Acts 18:9-10 says “Do not be afraid; keep on speaking, do not be silent. For I am with you.”

Looking back, I know none of this would have been possible without the work of the Holy Spirit.

He’s the one who stirred my heart when I read that book, gave me the courage to pray that prayer and opened the doors that followed.

The Holy Spirit empowers us, guides us and speaks through us when we step out in faith.

It’s not about our ability, but our availability. When we surrender to God and ask the Holy Spirit to lead, He will equip us to do what we never thought possible. If you’re feeling that nudge in your heart right now, don’t ignore it, that’s Him calling you.

Trust Him and say yes. And watch what God will do with your life.

Here’s what was in the back of that book. I have no regrets on saying this prayer 8 years ago and I would encourage anyone to do the same!

“Perhaps you wish to enter full-time service with Jesus Christ, and dedicate your life to his ministry, but have never taken that final step of faith. If you desire to serve Jesus with all your heart, please pray this prayer, and expect him to call you.”

Dear Lord Jesus,

I have given my life to you, but I repent right now, because I have done very little which is constructive for the kingdom of God.

I ask you to forgive me. From today onwards I am offering myself for full-time service. I acknowledge that the time is short, that the kingdom of God is at hand, and that people need to hear the gospel and repent.

There are so few people preaching the Good News of Christ, although many are perishing because they have never heard, and I want to make a difference.

I pray that you will use me in whatever area you are calling me to.

Help me to make a start after I have put this book down. Help me reach my next-door neighbor, the people down the street, and press right on as you lead.

And, Lord, if you should call me to a foreign country, I pray that you will make a way for me and give me the faith and courage to follow it through.

I ask this in Jesus’ precious name. Amen!
