The Hancock-Henderson Quill, Inc.
Hancock County Clerk and Recorder, Holly A. Wilde-Tillman, is alerting residents to recent reports of attempted property fraud involving farmland in the county.
Local real estate agents have been contacted by individuals claiming they wanted to sell property. After further investigation, the agents discovered that the true property owners—who live outside the area—had no intention of selling. Both reported cases involved farmland.
“This type of fraud is a very real threat to property owners,” said Wilde-Tillman. “We want to make sure everyone in Hancock County knows this can happen and that there are tools available to help protect their property rights.”
Wilde-Tillman encourages all property owners to sign up for Property Fraud Alert, a free notification service that alerts individuals whenever a document is recorded under their name.
This service is available to all Hancock County property owners. To enroll, visit https://hancockcounty-il.gov/county-clerk/property-fraud-alerty/ or call the Clerk and Recorder’s Office at 217-357-3911, where staff are available to assist.
Wilde-Tillman has also notified local real estate professionals, banks, and title companies about the issue and confirmed her office will work closely with the Hancock County Sheriff and State’s Attorney should further action be required.
“Our office is committed to protecting Hancock County residents,” Wilde-Tillman added.
“By signing up for Property Fraud Alert, landowners can take an important step in safeguarding their property.”
