Biggsville Board Approves Sewer Ordinance, Discusses Hotel Tax and Property Compliance

(From the minutes taken by Judy L. Gravgaard, Village Clerk)

The Village of Biggsville Board of Trustees convened on August 6, at 6:05 p.m., with Mayor Eric Craig presiding.

Board members present included Stephanie Carig, Kathie Curtiss, Casey Goff, Tammy Slater, and Chris Webb, with James McCabe absent. Also in attendance were Clerk Judy Gravgaard, Treasurer April Hill, and maintenance staff Mike West, Zach Spiker, and Jaegar Craig.

Approvals and Reports

The board swiftly moved to approve the July minutes, invoices, and treasurer’s report. Slater made the motion, seconded by Webb, and it passed unanimously.

Infrastructure and Community Updates

Streets and Water: The village has made significant progress on infrastructure improvements. West Street, Worthy Acres, and Hillcrest Street have been successfully resurfaced, enhancing safety and accessibility for residents.

Parks and Recreation: Goff provided an update on the village’s recreational facilities, announcing that new basketball hoops have arrived.

The old hoops have been dismantled, and the new ones are ready for assembly.

Old Business: Sewer Ordinance

Under old business, the board addressed Ordinance #405-A2, which pertains to sewer use regulations.

Curtiss moved to approve the ordinance, with Goff seconding, and the motion carried.

New Business: Taxes and Property Compliance

The board discussed the potential implementation of a 1% tax on hotels and Airbnbs operating within the village.

To explore this further, they agreed to consult the village attorney to understand the legal and procedural requirements.

This initiative could provide additional revenue to support local projects and services.

Additionally, the board addressed property compliance issues related to Ordinance #300A-5, which governs property usage and maintenance.

Several residences were identified as non-compliant. The board plans to send letters to these homeowners, notifying them of the violations.

Failure to address these issues could result in fines, with further non-compliance potentially escalating to legal action from the village attorney.

Adjournment

With all agenda items addressed, Stephanie Carig moved to adjourn the meeting at 7:13 p.m., seconded by Tammy Slater. The motion passed, concluding the session.

This information was taken from the August 6 minutes approved at the September 3 regular meeting. The next meeting is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 1 at Village Hall.
