Meet your neighbor Mark Nichols. Mark grew up in Alma, Michigan. He was raised in a Christian home. His father was a preacher for over 50 years. He now serves as the part-time associate minister at Burnside Christian Church in semi-retirement.
Growing up in Michigan, Mark became a devoted Detroit sports fan—cheering on the Lions, Pistons, and Tigers.
Mark has two sisters. The three of them have always shared a close bond. His older sister passed away two years ago from liver cancer at the age of 51. He also has a twin sister who is 31 minutes older than him. They are mirror opposites—she’s a girl, he’s a boy; she’s right-handed, he’s left-handed.
He attended Alma High School, home of the Panthers, and graduated in 1994.
After high school, he attended Bible college in Moberly, Missouri, where he met his wife, Lindsay. They have been married for 28 years.
Though they were unable to have children of their own, they have built deep relationships with many children in their church, investing in and loving them as if they were their own.
Like any typical family, they enjoy watching movies and TV, eating out, and riding motorcycles together (he drives, Lindsay rides).
He currently serves as the preacher at Burnside Christian Church, where he has been on staff for a total of 25 years—the first 7 years as youth minister. Lindsay has worked at the Carthage Public Library for the past 25 years as well. They love living in Hancock County and especially love their church family at Burnside Christian Church.
In addition to preaching, he teaches online classes for Midwest Ministry Training, a minister trade-school model focused on training the next generation of preachers, youth ministers, and children’s ministers.
He is a third-generation preacher. His grandfather, Nichols, was a preacher, and so was his father. He and his dad even attended the same Bible college, 25 years apart, and were taught by some of the same professors. To this day, his dad remains the first person he turns to with questions about the Bible.
In his free time, he enjoys riding motorcycles, playing guitar, hiking in the mountains of Colorado, camping, grilling, and—most of all—talking about God and Jesus.
