West Central Elementary Topple Nearly 1,200 Cereal Boxes in “Boxes of Gratitude” Domino Challenge

West Central Elementary School turned its hallways into a winding river of cereal boxes on Friday, November 7, as 5th graders successfully completed their “Boxes of Gratitude Domino Challenge,” collecting 1,154 boxes for local families in need.

Students spent the last week of October and the first week of November collecting donations.

The boxes were then carefully arranged into one continuous domino chain that snaked through the school’s corridors.

When the first box was tipped, the colorful cascade tumbled down while students lined the halls holding signs thanking veterans for their service.

Every single box was donated to the Family Outreach Community Center.

The volume of cereal caught even the organizers by surprise, so many boxes arrived that the FOCC had to borrow extra storage space from the nearby Stronghurst Presbyterian Church.

The FOCC shared their excitement on Facebook:

“Our community came together for a Cereal Domino Drive that filled West Central Elementary School’s halls and our hearts! Box by box, hallway by hallway, the sound of laughter and teamwork echoed as almost 1200 boxes of cereal came tumbling down, all headed to families in our county.

“This turned into something so much more than I ever would have anticipated. Thank you to everyone who helped make this moment possible. This project brought together creativity, gratitude and community spirit, and the cereal will be shared with all of our Henderson County food pantries. What an unforgettable day!’”

A simple classroom idea grew into a county-wide display of generosity, gratitude, and good old-fashioned fun, on box of cereal at a time.
