La Harpe Elementary School Shines in Regional Competition

Fifteen students represented La Harpe Elementary School at the Science Olympiad regional competition on February 15.

These students competed against five other schools in twenty three different events.

Some events were build events where the students built and tested different devices in La Harpe and then took them to test against other schools. Other events were a test or activity that was completed at WIU.

La Harpe students built a rubber band helicopter, a car propelled by dropping weight, a chain reaction machine, and a device that shoots a ball with air.

Students were tested on topics like astronomy, ecology, meteorology, anatomy, and forensics. Each event students compete in adds to the overall team score. The lower the points, the better. La Harpe’s team score was 66, which earned an overall third place finish. Out of the 23 events, La Harpe students earned first or second place in 11 events!

Our staff and community members are immensely proud of the team. The next stop will be the state competition on April 12 at University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana!
