Natalie Dowell Schmitt: Thinking Out Loud

"Just Trying To Help"

Little fingers poking into dough…dumping flour/feed..Just trying to help. Smile and say thanks. Rita

But if we push eager little hands out of the way for the sake of time/progress..we are really just setting ourselves up for more work in the future. We need to take time to let our little ones help and learn by our sides as they grow

How did we learn to fix the silo unloader. Make carmel rolls. Drive the tractor and lift the gate on the spreader just right so there isn’t a pile of slop at the end of the row.

"Just Let Us Help"

We may not have the same family blood, but we share the same dirt under our fingernails.

Just let us help. Not because we feel sorry for you, but because we love you. We are all “neighbors”..regardless of the miles between our back doors.

Back home by me was anyone within a 50 mile radius of my home county. My next-door neighbors lived as far away as 20 miles, but we always knew that we could count on one another for help when the chips were down and we needed an extra hand, a strong shoulder or an all hands on deck whirlwind ready to pick up the pieces for you.

It’s is just a matter of perspective. What is 5 years? For my computer it means that it is obsolete and very outdated. For a car, it means that it is just starting to get broken in and comfortable. Taxes and insurance rates drop too.

Farmers are a strange breed. We swear at a stubborn animal who can’t find an open door, yet don’t even blink when we see our reflection in a mirror with a look of defiance.
