Don’t Settle For a Spiritual Drought

I grew up in church and heard about miracles in the Bible, but I somehow missed that God is still the same miracle working God today that he was back then. He’s the same yesterday, today and forever. God wants a relationship with us and to live by faith.

Elijah, a prophet of God, had prayed and asked the Lord to send rain and break the drought. He sent his servant to see if there was any sign of rain and this was the report after the servant returned the seventh time. Kings 18:44 says "There is a cloud, as small as a man's hand, rising out of the sea."

When was the last time you prayed to God and asked Him to break the drought in your life? Not only the drought of rain, but maybe being unemployed, addiction, anger issues, a financial crisis, health problems, relationships, equipment break downs, being depressed or many other things.

When Elijah's servant told him about the little cloud, Elijah immediately sent him to warn King Ahab that the rain was coming and indeed, the drought was broken. Today with satellites and technology, we can anticipate when and how rain is coming, but it is God who sends it. We have to exercise faith to receive it and Elijah took the Lord at His Word.

God can do the same, no matter what the weather man is telling us. I’ve seen it time and time again since I started farming. He’s stopped rain from coming so I can finish up planting or harvesting and brought the rain when the forecast looked disastrous and the crops were burning up. This doesn’t mean that we’ll never have a failed crop or bad things won’t happen, because God doesn’t promise us an easy life here on earth. But he can use every situation for the good and His glory.

Matthew 7:7 says "Ask and you shall receive." Back in 2023 I planted corn into a field of dry dirt the 3rd week of May. It was a clay knob and takes a lot of moisture to raise a good crop. After planting, the rain shut off completely for over a month. The seed never germinated and I wondered if it was Gods plan to just put a cover crop there. I knew He could still do the impossible though. I was hesitant to post about that field because of how ugly it looked, but felt God wanted me too so He could use it for His glory in the end no matter what the outcome was.

The top picture was taken the 3rd week of June with seeds still sitting in dry dirt. The forecast didn’t look very promising, but I was believing for a miracle. Eventually the rain came after 40 days and the drought was broken with a 2 inch rain. It also came with the Derecho storm and 120 mph winds. But the drought was broken and the whole field emerged within a few days. After that, God provided over 25 inches of rain the rest of the season to finish out a great crop.

It reminded me of myself before I started a relationship with God. I was about to burn up from addiction and many other struggles and there was no hope from a realistic standpoint, without God. I didn’t want to be here anymore and didn’t think I’d ever be able to get out of the rut I was in. Then God came in, broke the drought and transformed my life. He is indeed a faithful, miracle working God and can turn any situation around, no matter how bad it looks.

We cannot live without rain and we cannot live without the rain of God in our lives , the Holy Spirit. Luke 17:5 says "Lord, increase our faith" Ask and believe, because the Bible tells us “Anything you ask in My name I will give to you.” Just like the rain brings life to dry, cracked ground, the Holy Spirit brings life, power, and renewal to our dry, weary souls.

He’s not just a force or a distant presence, we’re invited into a daily relationship with Him. The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead is alive and active in us today, guiding, comforting, and equipping us to walk by faith. He reminds us of God’s promises, strengthens us in the waiting, and empowers us to believe for miracles even when the skies still look clear.

Don’t settle for spiritual drought, invite the Holy Spirit in and let Him rain down in every area of your life. The cloud may seem small at first, but it’s the beginning of the breakthrough!
