Susan M. Maxwell-Schneider will step down as Henderson County State’s Attorney on May 16.
“I find that it is not work that I am well suited to, and you deserve a state’s attorney who is going to be all in and be able to speak on all the civil and other matters that you deal with,” said Maxwell-Schneider as she addressed the Henderson County Board at their April 8th meeting.
Maxwell-Schneider plans to return to McDonough County to prosecute cases, which she has been doing for the last 21 years.
“I appreciate the opportunity, and I will help out in any way I can going forward to find someone suitable to the position,” said Maxwell-Schneider.
Henderson County will now need to fill the state’s attorney seat for the 3rd time in the last 17 months.
Maxwell-Schneider was appointed to the position in September of last year following the departure of Rachel Mast. Mast resigned the post last fall after serving less than one year to accept the position of associate judge of the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court of Illinois.
In November of 2023 Colby Hathaway resigned to take the position as Henry County Circuit Court Judge after serving as Henderson County State’s Attorney for 7 years.
