Take The Quill Along

The Quill traveled to Mississippi with Hugh and Sheila Forbes of Media, Illinois when they took a trip to the south to celebrate their recent wedding anniversary. One of their stops was in Vicksburg, Mississippi which was the site of one of the major Civil War battles.

The National Military Park consists of 1,815 acres. Several battles were fought there with no winner. Finally the Union Army under General U.S. Grant, blockaded the city for 47 days and the confederates surrendered on July 4th 1863. This gave the Union complete control of the Mississippi River.

The park has over 1400 monuments and markers. Pictured is the Illinois monument, the largest one, which was erected in 1906 at a cost of over $200,000 (4 million in today’s dollars). It has the names of all the Illinois troops that were involved.

When you take a trip, be sure to take “The Quill” along and have your picture taken with it and send it to us. Let's see where all “The Quill” can travel.
