Randy Hensley began his United States Postal Service career as a part-time rural route carrier in July 1986.
He was a part-time carrier until earning a full-time rural route carrier position (route 2) on September 9, 1989.
Randy belongs to a long family line of postal workers. Out of the last 100 years, 81 of them had a family member working there.
His Grandfather, George Earl Gillett, worked as a rural route carrier from 1923 to 1947. He delivered mail by horse and buggy. “Everyday he would stop halfway through his route, change out his team of horses, eat a sandwich, and finish delivering the mail.”
At that time, there were six rural route carriers out of the La Harpe post office.
His Uncle, Bernard Gillett, worked in Tucson, Arizona as a city carrier from 1966 to 1988. His cousin, Byron Gillett, worked as a city carrier in Illinois from 1985 to 2012. Randy’s Mother, Betty Hensley Link, began her United States Postal Service career as a clerk in January 1972. She retired on November 30, 1990.
They worked 4 years together at the La Harpe Post Office. “It was great working with Mom!”
When Randy started his postal career, he delivered to 230 mailboxes. He drove 100 miles, six days a week, and retired with 365 mailboxes. “I enjoyed working with people at the post office and I really enjoyed the people-my customers.
It’s been a great job for 38 years!”
