Stronghurst Board Hears Concerns

By: Shirley Linder, Executive Editor

During the guest portion of the Village of Stronghurst board meeting on August 5th, David Knutstrom told the board of the newly formed “Henderson County Recreation Association”. This organization is a 501-c3 with 5 members currently.

Their mission statement is “To promote growth and athletic ability of children and adults in small towns via pickleball and other similar activities.”

The group learned there is funding available for Henderson and Warren Counties, specifically, that is not being utilized by Henderson County, only by Warren County.  There is other funding available also, but requires it be a 501-c3 corporation in order to be eligible to receive it.

The committee would like to work jointly with the village board to modify the old tennis court in the village park. Contracts for vendors would have to be under the Village of Stronghurst entity, however, HCRA would provide funding for the project and would ask for some monetary financial support from the village. The committee is considering removal of the asphalt on the current tennis/pickleball court and replace it with textured concrete. Two pickleball courts occupy ˝ of the surface area and they are looking for ideas to occupy the other ˝ of the area. Mayor Brendan Schaley said they will place this on the agenda for discussion next month.

Mike Rodeffer reported that his recycle is not being picked up. Mayor Schaley said they are having trouble with recycle pick up and if it happens to notify him and he will contact LRS.

Ronnie Gittings presented the board with a report on the Nitrification Action Plan (NAP) prepared by Benson & Associates, that the EPA has mandated, which will require more testing to the water system daily. This will require another set of scales, monitor, etc to implement at a cost of $7,410. This was approved by the board.

Police report for July: 63.5 hours worked; 2 training hours; 1 verbal warning on a traffic stop; 4 service calls; 1 arrest; 16 business courtesy checks.

The board adopted the Final Budget and Appropriation Ordinance.

A discussion was held, with the attorney, what legal action could be taken regarding overgrown/abandoned properties. First step is to notify the owner and then if nothing done can take legal action.

Mike Bohnenkamp asked if it would be possible to look into solar panels for the village.

The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 3rd at 6 p.m.
