La Harpe City Council Discusses Selling Land for Health Clinic Center

On March 25th the La Harpe City Council met at 7 p.m. Mayor Kat Hasten-Reed told the Council she had met with Ada Bair, CEO of Memorial Hospital about the possibility of selling the lot or lots east of the City Park to build a health clinic center. Hasten-Reed explained that Bair has met with some state politicians about the chance to receive some grants or funding for the project. If the funding for the project would happen, the council decided it would then be willing to sell the property to Memorial Hospital, as long as they did build on the property.

Mark Irish, President of the La Harpe Telephone Company, addressed the Council about the changes that will be coming with television. Irish informed the council that 20 years ago small phone companies went together to provide affordable cable television but now that system is becoming obsolete. Irish explained 5 of the small phone companies have dropped out and it is becoming more difficult and expensive to provide service. Irish noted he is trying to come up with the best possible option available for the residents at a reasonable price. Irish explained he’s been looking for about 5 years for a solution. Irish also noted they would be sending out public mailers and notices in the Quill to prepare their customers for the change.

Max Owsley, ESDA Rep, noted the county has a new ESDA director. Owsley also noted there are new ESDA laws coming out.

The council discussed body cams for the Police department and are looking into the best options and prices available.

Council also unanimously approved:

The next meeting will be on April 8th at 7 p.m. and there will be a joint committee meeting at 6 p.m. to discuss the Budget Appropriations.

Council adjourned at 8:35 p.m.
