Stronghurst Board Signs New Trash Pickup Contract

By: Shirley Linder, Executive Editor

Monday, November 6th, the Village of Stronghurst board signed a five year contract, beginning December 1st, with Lakeshore Recycling Systems, LLC, (LRS) for garbage and recycling pick up. LRS will provide customers with a 95 gallon trash can and a 95 gallon recycle container. Pick up will now be on Mondays, beginning December 4th.  Waste Management will be picking up their recycle containers on November 25th.

Ronnie Gittings reported service for DR900 (water testing instrument) will require some calibration regularly. He informed the board the manufacturer has a program that will save 10% of the cost. The program will cost $248 per year and include free shipping of the DR900 twice a year to be calibrated. The board approved the proposal.

Police Chief Arbry Vancil’s police report included: 52 hours worked: 124 miles on squad car; 1 service call, 10 business checks; Brokaw’s final warning. He stated the squad car is in the shop.

Doug Erickson of Benton & Associate, Inc. presented the board with a review of his meeting with the water committee, concerning future projects the village is interested in doing, such as a new well, replacing water mains, etc.  He stated it would be helpful to have the water, sewer, and recycling income and expenses separate as opposed to the combined report they now maintain before submitting a request to the EPA for funding. He will meet with the water committee again after Thanksgiving.

Under old business of property clean up, it was stated the Brokaw’s have been issued their final notice and now can be fined and a court date set.

Paige Torrance reported to the board there will be a Christmas parade at 6 p.m. on Friday, December 1st. She is working on the route and preparing entry forms. The parade will be before the Stronghurst Booster Club’s lighting of the tree in the village park.

Mike Swisher suggested that in the coming year the board research the feasibility of a solar panel field for the village. Mayor Brendan Schaley said he had had a call regarding the village’s ordinance on solar fields, (of which there is none) and was told there was one to be erected within the village limit. Schaley asked where and was told they would get back to him, but they have not.
