Isaac Link Completes His First Solo Flight

Isaac Link, 16 year old son of Tom and Teresa Link of rural La Harpe, completed his first solo flight in a Cessna 172, as a part of his Private Pilot License course.

After the first solo flight, in keeping with tradition,  his instructor, Mr. Jerry Winters, cut the tail off the shirt he wore.

In the early days of flying, there was no radio communication between the student and instructor, who were often sitting front-to-back instead of side-to-side. To communicate, the instructor had to tug on the back of the student’s shirt. At the end of the first solo flight, this method of communication was no longer necessary, and the shirt tail was no longer needed – so off it came!

Standing with his dad, Tom Link, Isaac, 16, of La Harpe proudly shows off the date that he completed his first solo flight (Feb. 11, 2023), as part of his private pilot license course. 2023 has been a month of first for Isaac. He also obtained his first driver’s license in January and started his first job.
