Council Hears “Love La Harpe” Committee Is Disbanding

by Michael Rodeffer, The Quill

La Harpe Councilman Greg Wisslead said that he had spoken with Shawn Thompson and was told that the “Love La Harpe” committee that has been active the last few years promoting the city, would be disbanding. Money they had left would be given to the city.

The report was made after Mayor Kat Hasten-Reed called the regular La Harpe City Council meeting to order at 7 p.m. on October 24th and after everyone recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag.

Councilman Randy Shumaker reported that he has received the contract back from Shawn Stoneking to tear down the 4 story building, the city has acquired, across from the City Park on South Center Street.

City street employee David Little reported the salt for the roads has been ordered at a cost of $155 per ton delivered. Little stated they would be ordering 10 ton of sand at a cost of $300. Little stated the culvert on Archer Street was put in last week. Little told the council Central Stone had 3/8” chips which they use and would be filling 1 of two bins where it is stored. Little said 1 bin is still full from last year.

David Little also asked the council about buying a pallet of permanent-patch for the roads. Little stated it comes in 60 pound bags and can be used year round for pot holes. Little said it gets hard and should stay in the pot holes longer than the cold patch.

Council unanimously approved buying a pallet at a cost of $1,032.50.

Council member Kelley Harkey reported she was working on the figures for the tax levy and would be sending everyone a copy so it could be voted on at the next meeting.

The council discussed the need to rent a lift to trim trees on the road to the reservoir. Council decided to get some prices before taking any action.

Councilman Randy Shumaker reported he was looking into a truck for the city which could be used as a snowplow, spreader, etc. Shumaker stated the city has been approved a grant for this and hoped to find a truck suitable for the city.

Mayor Kat Hasten-Reed asked David Little to see about having the weeds and trees at the corner of Archer and 6th cleaned up.

Councilman Randy Shumaker reported the city had been given a violation from IEPA concerning waste or sludge at the reservoir.

Mayor Hasten-Reed stated that she had been in contact with Jack Kusek from IMEG and had sent information to IEPA explaining that the area involved had been approved by IEPA in the past.

In other action the council unanimously approved:
