Village Informed of EPA Law

By: Shirley Linder, Quill Editor

At the Village of Stronghurst meeting on March 14, Water Superintendent Ronnie Gittings passed out, to the trustees a short version of the EPA law on water service lines in resident’s homes. Gittings explained to the board that he is now required to enter every residence in Stronghurst to determine what kind of water pipes are in people’s homes. He stressed he will not be there as a plumbing inspector but just to check on the first 18” of water pipe coming into the building. They have already completed the inventory from the meter pits to the houses.

Gittings also said he hoped everyone would cooperate and allow him access into their basements to do this survey. If he is not allowed entrance the residence will be recorded as having lead pipes and the issue will be dealt with at a later date. He states he is relatively sure there are no lead pipes but if there should be the homeowners will be encouraged to have them replaced by a licensed plumber.

Following completion of his survey, Clerk Hollie Allen will be required to put all the information onto the village or EPA website.

Sara Brown had met with the Village of Stronghurst liquor committee and requested a special permit for The Feedlot Grill regarding an event to be held on April 23rd.  The event is to be a dart tournament, running from 10 a.m. until 8 or 9 p.m. and she is requesting permission to have a tent outside the north door for the overflow crowd to be able to take their drinks to. She is also requesting that Main Street be closed from the Corner of Broadway and Main to the alley, so those stepping outside of the tent to smoke are not in danger. The board unanimously approved her permit.

Police report for February included: hours worked 51.5; squad car patrol mileage 252; traffic stop 1; uniform traffic ticket-1 revoked driver’s license; notice to appear 1; assist 1 domestic; service calls 7; arrest 1 warrant; business courtesy checks 15. Police Chief Vancil announced him and Mayor Brenda Schaley would be going around town to check on what needs to be cleaned up. Clerk Hollie Allen volunteered to go with them.

Chairman of the Zoning Committee requested the board’s approval for a zoning variance at 122 N Elizabeth Street, Judy Rink residence.  She would like to build a car port behind her house and is requesting variance from the 10’ property line. Much of her property is bordered by land owned by the railroad. After much discussion the board unanimously agreed to the variance. Following the approval of the variance it was brought up she had requested some rock be put in the alley which caused more discussion. However, after hearing the alley is used by all the residents on that block and that there was mud being splashed on garages it was agreed to put rock in the alley.
