Book Signing Brings Crowd to Buy The Book

Saturday, Nov. 13th Rosemary Dehner Keeley (left) traveled with her husband John from Bettendorf, IA to the popular bookstore "Burlington By The Book," to buy a signed copy of BELOVED BURLINGTON, Vol II as Rosemary is mentioned in the book along with her family's former business–Dehner's Seed & Supply Co..

Author Jane Sutter Brandt of Rochster, New York (neice of the late Bob and Joyce Louden), is an award-winning journalist, with more than 30 years experience in newspapers, magazines, and websites.

Highly revered in her hometown of Burlington, IA , she learned many of her good work ethics from working at her great grandfather Joe Sutter 's popular Sutter Drug Company which was located at the busy corner of Jefferson and Third Streets and inside the Tama building that covered a quater of a block and recently destroyed by fire, leaving an empty lot in the heart of downtown Burlington where once a vibrant mixture of business, socializing and night life took place.

The tragedy stirred up memories and stories in the talented writer so she set out to write some information about the popular drug store and soda bar where she made many tuna sandwiches, dished out numerous scoops of ice cream and enjoyed much laughter and friendship. Thus her first book, Sutter's Sodas Satisfy - A memoir of 90 years of Sutter Drug Co came off the presses in 2015. It was timely and the rave of all who remembered and loved this nostalgic pharmacy, drug store, and soda bar. During her research, information was gained of other iconic businesses and she was encouraged to write a second book to include "stories" of those inspiring people and businesses.

The second book came off the presses in 2019, appropriately named Beloved Burlington - featuring businesses you knew and loved! Featured are: J.S. Schramm Co, The Arion, Gnahn's Book and Stationery Store, Riepe-Peterson Clothing Co., Paule Jewelry Co, The Typewriter Shop, John H. Witte & Sons, Witte Camera and Camera Land, Brinck's, Heine's Grocery and Twin Oaks Drive-In, and Apothecary 24. The book has raised the already popular Sutter-Brandt to yet another level in the eyes of those business families who worked so deligently to serve customers well and while doing so, helped build Burlington into a vibrant and attractive city.

This past weekend Nov. 13-14

Brandt returned to unveil her sequel to her book: "Beloved Burlington Volume II: Featuring businesses you knew and loved!"

With more research gained Sutter Brandt was now able to deliver the important stories of: The Capitol movie theater, App's Music House, The Hotel Burlington, Dehner's Seed and Supply Co., Camp Laundry, The Model Clothing and Shoes, Gustafson Bros. Dairy, Sheagren Funeral Home, The Gift Center, and The Palace movie theater.

Nostalgia and historical photos are packed into the new book.

The popularity of the first Beloved Burlington book inspired author Jane Sutter Brandt to serve up another rewarding dive into businesses that Baby Boomers and elders fondly remember in Burlington, Iowa.

Did you buy your first pair of Lee button fly jeans at The Model? Did you take guitar lessons from O.W. Appleton at App's Music House? Did you indulge in the delectable orange rolls at the Hotel Burlington? Did you laugh and cry through hundreds of movies at The Capitol and The Palace? Did you drink ice cold milk delivered to your back porch by Gustafson Bros. Dairy?

Beloved Burlington Volume II: Featuring businesses you knew and loved! will ignite your memories of those and other iconic businesses: Camp Laundry, Dehner's Seed and Supply, The Gift Center, and Sheagren Funeral Home.

Sutter Brandt combines meticulous research, interviews with the entrepreneurial families, and more than 130 historical photos into another nostalgic look back in time. "Beloved Burlington Volume II would not have happened were it not for the enthusiastic buyers of the first edition published in 2019," Sutter Brandt said.

"Their passion for nostalgia convinced me that they wanted more. There were so many businesses worthy of inclusion that I couldn't fit into the first volume."

Sutter Brandt is the great-granddaughter of Joseph R. Sutter, founder of Sutter Drug Co. Her book Sutter's Sodas Satisfy: A memoir of 90 years of Sutter Drug Co. was published in 2015 and proved popular with those who remember the drug store and its iconic soda fountain.

Her company, Sutter Communications in Rochester, N.Y., offers a variety of services including writing, editing, public relations and publishing consulting.

Her book debut and signing was from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, at Burlington By The Book, 301 Jefferson St.: where she signed copies of her new book and previous books.

She enjoyed reminiscing with patrons as they shared their own beloved memories of the businesses featured.

Also at the event, her husband Gary Brandt, signed copies of his new and "very good" novel: As Beautiful As This: A novel of reconciliation of war and peace within an American family. https://www.suttermedia.net/books/

As they both offered and their signed copies, Gary Brandt said, "We are a good team. We feed off of each other as we work on our books."

Sutter Brandt also signed books then shared stories from the book plus interesting anecdotes that didn't make it into the book as she talked to a full crowd at the Heritage Center Museum, lower level at 501 N. Fourth St. Sunday, Nov. 14.

Beloved Burlington Volume II: Featuring businesses you knew and loved! retails for $19.95.
