Hail Takes Toll On Corn and Bean Fields

by Mike Rodeffer, The Quill

Last Friday night, July 9th, intense storms hit a wide area of Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri. Heavy rain and hail devastated some farm fields. Hail in Hancock County started around Dallas City, hit parts of Durham Township continuing south to the LaCrosse area and continued south to Fountain Green.

Many soybean plants had several inches of the top of the plant cut off.

Many cornfields in the path of hail were also riddled and stripped of their leaves.

Reports of 2" to 2 1/2" of rain pelted the area on Friday night. Saturday and Sunday brought more light showers to the area.

Augusta, site of the Hancock County Fair, got pounded with 8-9 inches of rain over the weekend and major flooding around the town.
