La Harpe City Council Meeting November 22nd

By: Michael Rodeffer, The Quill

Since Mayor Kat Hasten-Reed was absent due to an illness the council elected Randy Shumaker as Mayor Pro-tem. The La Harpe City Council unanimously approved paying Laverdiere $1,500 to fix the drainage problem at Park Lane. Laverdiere met with IMEG representative Megan Crook, Mayor Kat Hasten-Reed and Jason Siegworth last week to discuss the drainage problem which was a result of the water main being put in last spring.

After the water main project, the Siegworth yard stayed wet and pooled water most of the summer, which made it impossible to mow until late in the summer.

After the meeting on site it was determined the drainage issue was not a tile issue and not a result of bad or incorrect work.

Laverdiere proposed creating a "swell" from the front of the property to the back of the property to eliminate the ponding after a rain and to allow the water to flow to a more suitable area for drainage.

This was agreeable to the homeowner (Jason Siegworth). Laverdiere agreed to do the work at cost ($1,500). Work will not be completed until spring. Siegworth thanked the council for their help.

Council Approves COVID Pay

The La Harpe Council approved a motion to pay up to 10 days of pay for city employees who provide proof of a positive test and/or get tested and wait for results (usually 2 days).

Approves Parade Route and Blocking Off City Park Streets

The La Harpe Council also approved Parade Resolution #2021-B for a parade route on Main Street to 4th Street on Tuesday, December 7th. Council also approved blocking off the streets around the city park for horse carriage rides. The parade will start at 7:00 p.m.

Greg Wisslead informed the council that the stickers were ready for 2022 golf carts, 4 wheelers or ATVs. Wisslead said he could pick them up and just needed a $540 check for the 150 stickers.

Scott Rosson addressed the council to let them know he was interested in a full-time police officer job. Rosson advised the council he had all the certifications needed. Rosson said he had been in law enforcement since 2001.

Council decided to call a special meeting on December 6th at 6:00 p.m. to specifically address the police officer employment.
