Aunt Polly

Hello folks,

Flo and Clyde went to church with me last Sunday and made it through this week's disappointing election of her two candidates President Trump and Vice President Pence, losing the election.

She said, the preacher is right. "God is in control and that won't ever change," and according to the good book, in the end, God wins!

I was so much enjoying a pleasant Sunday dinner with Flo and Clyde and we were just about to have some pumpkin pie which Flo had made drizzled with fresh sorghum poured over the top when I heard the back door slam! Then I heard some heavy footsteps and someone mumbling, so I hurried to see who that could possibly be.

Well, you can probably guess. It was Ethel Farkwad and she was madder than an old hornet whose nest had just gotten upset over the election.

I told Ethel the same thing I had told Flo last week, that there is no use of getting upset. She'd feel a whole lot better if she would make the best of it and go do something nice for her neighbors!

"Look what Flo did, Ethel. She made a delicious pumpkin pie and we were just about to enjoy it. Sit down and join us and I'll get you a cup of freshly made coffee," I said.

"How can you eat and enjoy a pie when the whole country is going to hell in a handbasket?" Ethel snapped. I'm not hungry!" "Ethel, if you get all stressed and don't eat or sleep, you're more apt to get the coronavirus or something worse," I said. "Anger and worry is like a rockin' chair, it gives you something ta do, but it doesn't get ya anywhere. Now, come sit down with us and I'll fix you a plate of fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet corn, and orange salad. If you don't want pie, I have your favorite coconut applecake I made yesterday with whipping cream."

Ethel stomped out the door, but, five minutes later the door slammed again, and in she came stomping, swinging her purse and plopped herself down at the table. "Well, I don't want to get the coronavirus, so I guess I'll sit down and eat with you. Pass me the potatoes Clyde!"

Clyde immediately got up and handed her the potaotes. Apparently he recalled he had to run an errand. Ha! After he left, Flo and I changed the subject to Veterans Day. Clyde had served our country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam war and we asked Ethel if she had any ideas of how we could honor Clyde this Wednesday - Veterans Day.

While Clyde was gone, we got busy and planned a surprise BBQ pork dinner outside with baked beans, potato salad, some red, white, and blue frosted sugar cookies, and we even made a list of family and friends to call.

Ethel forgot about the election and was getting excited about Veterans Day as she had neighbors who were in the service.

"I'll ask them if they'll join us? They can wear masks and bring lawn chairs and we'll social distance. It'll be a grand time.

All's well that ends well. See ya in church, and God bless our veterans! -Love, Aunt Polly
