A large crowd gathered at the Hancock County courthouse May 19, just before the regular Hancock County Board meeting, encouraging the board to allow more businesses to open.
Signs stated "Re-open Hancock County" and "Attending church is essential."
Chad Stewart of Elvaston welcomed the crowd and introduced speakers.
"We need to defend our rights, and what's the government doing? They're taking them away from us," stated Mark Harrison, owner of The Wood Inn in Carthage. The COVID-19 restrictions have stopped all serving of food and drink inside restaurants, limiting sales to carry-out service.
"What irks me is the funeral homes," added Harrison.
