Oquawka: Memorial Day is a day of remembrance and respect. Local Veterans and volunteers placed 488 flags on Veterans graves in the Oquawka Cemetery.
As an added remembrance, every Veterans grave received a flag holder in memory of Michael G. McKee. Mike passed away on September 16, 2019 and served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War as a heavy equipment operator; he was stationed in France and Germany during his tour of duty.
Mike's passion was restoring and cleaning military headstones at the Oquawka Cemetery. He was also one of the longtime volunteers who placed flags on the Veterans graves every year. The family chose his memorial to benefit Veterans buried in the Oquawka cemetery. The flag holders will stay at each Veteran's grave all year as a symbol of respect for the Veterans.
