Holiday Blue Clues; Bad and Good News

I was doing some research for someone and ran across something I had written in 2002 and I thought I'd use some of it for this column.

I am sure by the time you get to December 25th, the holidays may be doing a number on you or your family and you may be headed for the blues. All the Hallmark movies of festive Christmases (with happy families) are not helping the situation either.

There are a few clues that you might be headed for "dog days" or the blues and I thought I might be able to help you in recognizing them.

Be Aware of the Sugar Highs

This is evident if you don't seem to be able to raise your voice high enough to get over the screaming kids, loud relatives, and trips to the grocery store.

The Leaning Tree

When the tree is starting to look a little weathered, missing limbs, leaning to one side, bulbs out, and according to the late Mrs. Mildred Bavery, "and its had as many hard knocks as you have" - the blues might be just around the corner.

The Last In Line

This could bring on the blues, if you are having a day when you were last in line for the shower-water cold, and then the toilet paper was gone, someone forgot to put the presents in the car, there are thirteen people and twelve warm rolls, hot gravy that is at the bottom of the bowl when it gets to you, and then you received the most beautiful present - but it didn't fit.

The Missing Child

This one gets us every time even. If fifty relatives show up, and there is one or two who couldn't make it - this really makes us blue. There Is NO cure for this feeling.

The Final Blues Clue

:may be the gifts you bought them wasn't the right color, wasn't what they wanted, wasn't well received or even unwrapped! The gift someone else got them was "perfect."

Well you tried. Next time warn them, they are all getting matching toothbrushes.

The good news is the blues won't last forever--but, they might be back again next December.

It might be a good time to focus on the Nativity and read the Christmas story and sing a few Christmas carols. -not Elvis's "It Will Be A Blue Christmas Without You", but something more like Burl Ives' "Holly Jolly Christmas".
