The Wisdom Of Barnyard Bruke: HARVEST 2019 - Auctions - Old Kids Test

Greetings ta ever one in western Illinois and all readers of "The Quill."

HARVEST 2019

Jasper Jenks, Cornelius Farkwad and other area farmers had coffee time tagether after somewhere around 1/2" rain kept them out of the fields fer a day and a half. They had been harvest'n beans last week which was test'n about 12% fer moisture but now they returned to harvest'n corn.

There's still areas where June corn is test'n in the fields as high as 30%. That wet conditions would require higher grain-dryer costs at the elevator and on the farm fer those who have installed dryers which cuts into already thin margins fer the farmer.

Other June plant'ns are test'n in the low 20's fer quite a large range. The fellers whose corn is test'n high are a wait'n fer it ta dry down, and others who are test'n low are hitt'n it hard and putt'n in some pretty late hours.

This time of year of cooler and shorter days, the crops are not dry'n down as fast-some are say'n only a point a week. So that will require 4 or 5 weeks and some farmers are afraid the weather won't hold fer that long.

In a normal year, some varieties dry a point or two a day during the longer days and warmer temperatures.

All-in-all, its a race against time and weather. Farmers are hopin' ta get the crops in before the weather breaks that brings increment weather not condusive fer good harvest'n conditons*.

Most farmers remember last year when there was still isolated fields of corn stand'n ate into the winter and early spring.

The hopscotch we talked about last week as farmers avoid wet spots is still go'n on as farmers move from field ta field find'n the dryest conditions as they race time.

Remain watchful ta avoid injuries and accidents as we hurry in the fields and rush across roads ta other fields.

Auctions

Jasper and Cornelius sez several farm real estate sales are comin' up and it will be interest'n if farmers will get out of the fields ta attend the auctions.

Jasper said he was want'n ta attend some of the sales ta see if land prices are hold'n up.

Cornelius sez the mornin' times of the sales makes it possible fer him ta attend. The boys are always wonder'n whose buy'n farm ground and what will the land bring and ya sure want ta be there if a bargain comes up.
