The La Harpe City Council voted down the Class A liquor license holders the ability to serve liquor on Sundays at their regular November 11th meeting.
Medardus Bundy, new owner of RB's Pit Stop (now "The Bar"), had asked the council to allow the bar to be open from 12:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Sundays.
Kevin Six, Mayor of Dallas City, was at the meeting to support Mr. Bundy in his request for the Sunday openings. Mr. Six stated he thought it would be a win-win situation for the city and the new owners. Mr. Six said Dallas City has allowed liquor sales at the Dallas City bars for 20-30 years and felt it would be added revenue for the city. Also Six said it gave residents a place to watch sporting games during Sundays.
Council member Brian Covert said he walked 4 hours, going house to house, and said the majority were for opening the bar on Sunday.
Council members Wisslead, Clover and Burford said the majority that had contacted them were against opening the bar on Sunday.
A motion was made to allow Class A liquor license holders to open on Sundays.
Randy Shumaker and Brian Covert voted in favor of the motion. Wisslead, Clover, Burford and Harkey opposed the motion. The motion was denied.
Scouts' Mock Agenda
Boy Scout Troop #138 were present to do a mock agenda on a city issue. The Boy Scouts chose to discuss a hole in front of the Post Office where the dirt had settled after some water piping had been done.
The Boy Scouts, came to the meeting table and proceeded to discuss the causes and resolutions for the problem.
Mayor Kat Hasten-Reed led them through the discussion and explained how to make a motion and follow through.
The Boy Scouts taking part were: Ashton Graves, Kaden Little, Logan Brown, Johnny Ravenscraft, Jackson Van Fleet and Isaac Link. The boys are doing this to help them earn a badge in Scouts.
The council also unanimously approved Ashley Johnson to take the water bill collections at the Johnson Agency building on West Main street.
Ryan and Ashley Johnson sell Country Company Insurance at their location. The council agreed the location on Main Street would be good. The Johnson's will be paid $300 per month.
The council approved the closings of a couple of streets during the Country Christmas parade on December 3rd. South Center Street from Main to 1st Avenue and North 1st Street from Main to Archer will be closed during parade hours.
The council also discussed hiring another part-time police officer.
Eric Moe, IMEG representative, asked for a motion to approve $18,000 as the expected expenditure from motor fuel tax for the coming year. The motion was approved.
City Clerk Lucretia McPeak asked for a motion to pay to La Harpe Township $782.87 from the motor fuel tax fund for salt. The motion passed.
