Village Presented With Memento From MSA

By: Shirley Linder, Quill Editor

Chris Cooper of MSA Engineers presented Mayor Brendan Schaley and the Stronghurst Village Board of Trustees with a gift on March 4th.

He presented them with a wooden flag wall plaque on which was written the Pledge of Allegiance.

Cooper said he remembered Mayor Schaley saying they were going to do things a little different and everyone stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance, something which had not happened in a long time at a board meeting. Cooper has worked with the board during the entire water tower project that has now finally been completed.

On behalf of MSA Engineers, Cooper presented the firm's final bill in the amount of $1,900, which the Stronghurst trustees voted to pay.

In the February board meeting it was reported Ronnie Gittings, Shane Reed, and Mayor Brendan Schaley had met with Cory Timmerman and Troy Werdel from Maguire Iron on January 25th. An agreement was reached in the amount of $12,200 to be paid to the village due to delays with completion of the water tower. In addition, the village will receive all extended warranties as presented by Maguire in previous offers for settlement.

Also, in the February meeting, the liquor ordinance was discussed.

There were questions in regards to last call and how late alcohol could be served. For the month of February, both businesses was to close at midnight and last call for sale of liquor was at 11 p.m.

Mayor Schaley said there was some "grey" areas in the current liquor ordinance that the board will try to have ironed out by the March meeting.

At this meeting (March 4th) Attorney Mariah Wallace brought an amendment to the liquor ordinance which the board discussed. It still was not quite the wording they desired so the attorney will work on it and bring it to the board in April for board approval and signing.

Virginia Ross asked the board what the policy was for keeping the business sidewalks cleared of snow and ice, as the owner of the building next to the Senior Center did nothing to the walks this winter.

Mayor Schaley said he would talk to the owner and see what could be done.

Rob Root, owner of Rivals on Main asked for permission to close the blinds at his business during the afternoon for a few hours due to the sun from the west causing a problem to his customers. He was granted permission to close them while the sun was a problem. Root stated he would have them opened back up as soon as the sun was not a problem.

Root also told the board two state inspectors had been in and everything in his business checked out.

As for the gaming machines, Root told the board they are just waiting on the state as all the paper work, finger printing, etc. has been done.
