Take "The Quill" Along

U.S. Army Veteran Ray Shafer, 95, of Biggsville who was at Omaha Beach in the 3rd wave during the invasion into Normandy, France 75 years ago, took "The Quill" along on D-Day June 6, 2019 to attend the ribbon cutting of the World War II Gallery D-Day Exhibit which is on display in Springfield at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum until January 14, 2020.

Ray, daughter Kathy Gibb, great granddaughter Rebecca Zielke are in front of doors of a military tank that slide open allowing you inside to see and hear the action of those horrendous days.

Ray had spent Monday and Tuesday in Great River Medical Center with the diagnoses of kidney failure, but with doctors helping him, he underwent dialysis treatment and blood transfusions in order to be able to attend this very important occasion in Springfield. Ray's nephew, Lee Shafer, a retired site interpretor at the library and now volunteer, had arranged for this special day to honor his Uncle Ray for serving his country. To Ray and all men and women in uniform, past, present, and future, God bless you and thank you. When you go on a trip, take "The Quill" along, and have your picture taken with it, and send it to us. Let's see where all "The Quill" can travel.
