Main Street Flag Fund - Community Support Continues

In April 2003, the La Harpe Masons began a project they had been discussing for quite some time.

With the passing of Cpl. Evan James in March 2003, the Masons decided to proceed with their plans in his honor. They wanted to show the community's support for our troops, and honor Cpl. James.

And less than two years later, the community suffered another loss, of Cpl. Josh Palmer in November 2004. Again, the flags were there to honor him, and show the community's continued support.

The Masons' goal was having a flag at every light pole on Main Street from the three Welcome signs at the edge of the city, to create an "Avenue of Flags", in addition to flags around the park.

Senior Deacon Bill Burt made sixty brackets for the flags, and continues to this day to maintain the brackets and flags on Main Street.

The late Hank Snyder was treasurer at that time and established the "Masons Flag Fund". The Masonic Lodge manages the Flag Fund and replaces worn flags when needed. The Masons greatly appreciate the past anonymous donors who have contributed to the fund for flags, brackets, and poles.

Currently, Jones Insurance of La Harpe is organizing a fund raiser this summer, with proceeds going to the Masons Flag Fund.

As part of the 4th of July festivities in La Harpe, they are hosting the Old Glory 5K Run/Walk for anyone interested in participating.

Registration is going on now. Details can be found on the Agency's Face Book page, as well as at several local businesses. Registration fees include a t-shirt if pre-registered, and awards will be presented.

With the proceeds of registrations, along with the generous contributions from many local businesses and sponsors, additional flags and brackets will be purchased.

This will enable the Mason's flag project to continue, with hopes to be extended further down Main St., honoring our Veterans and beautifying our town.

If you are unable to participate in the Old Glory 5K Run/Walk on the 4th of July, contributions to the Masons Flag Fund can be made at Jones Insurance or Fortress Bank.
