by Michael Rodeffer, The Quill

The La Harpe City Council met Monday night, July 23rd at 7 p.m. for their regular meting.

Present were the six council members: Kelly Harkey, Randy Shumaker, Greg Wisslead, Jerry Burford, Brian Covert, and Dave Clover, Mayor Kat Hasten-Reed, Clerk Lucretia McPeak, Treasurer Maggie Link and Attorney Chris Scholz. Also present were the ESDA correspondent Max Owsley, Chad Burt, Dan Gillett, and Michael Rodeffer. Police Chief Larry Finch arrived later.

The Council approved the treasurer's report and paying of bills which included paying Dixon Engineering $5260.00 for a preliminary maintenance inspection.

The Council also approved payment of $855.00 for patching material from Gray Quarries.

The Council approved buying a camera for the Dodge pickup for the Police Department at a cost not to exceed $5500.00 for the camera and the installation.

The Council held a brief discussion on contracting police duties with the Hancock County Sheriff. No proposal had been submitted by the Sheriff so for lack of that, it was tabled.

The Council approved the 2018-19 budget and Appropriation Ordinance #2018-16 after amending some figures.

City Clerk McPeak stated the budget and Appropriation Ordinance will be filed at the Hancock County Courthouse by the end of the month.

Mayor Hasten-Reed noted that a line item should be put on the next meeting's agenda to de-annex a property at 600 South G Street owned by Max Owsley.

Under new business, the Council decided to seek bids on replacing a window on the north side of City Hall in the Treasurer's office.

Also under new business, Dan Gillett wanted the Council to be aware of the need to replace the double doors in the building which is rented from the city by the Genealogy and Historical Society.

Gillett said the metal doors have rusted away at the bottom and this last winter caused a lot of heat loss in the cracks and crevices around the door. The City owns the building, originally "The Ladies Rest Room."

Gillett was going to check on the cost of replacing the door.

With no further business, the meeting was adjourned around 8:20 p.m.. The next meeting will be held August 13th (the second Monday of the month) at La Harpe City Hall at 7:00 p.m.
