West Central's senior athlete Freemie Shoemaker of Oquawka has been signed to run for Carl Sandburg's cross country team in Galesburg.
Freemie, 5'11, 140 pounds, is an outstanding track and field star at 18 years of age. He will be graduating with his 2018 class at West Central High School this May.
Freemie's primary position in track is the 1600 meter and his secondary position is 3200 meter. His top times for the two are 4:59 and 10:42.
He has qualified for Sectional twice, each time coming up short at Elmwood, one of the toughest Sectional meets in the state. He finished 35th last year.
Freemie Shoemaker, coached by his father, (U.S. Veteran Freeman E. Shoemaker Jr.), has always been pushed to do his very best and is proud of his accomplishments thus far. He hopes to grow as an athlete in the future and work hard everyday.
Freemie Shoemaker signed with Carl Sandburg Cross Country with their Coach Rodney Blue last week at West Central HS, outside Biggsville.
Coach Blue, was an accomplished runner in his own right. He held the 400-meter record at Galesburg HS for 20 years and finished 10th in the event at the 1976 state meet. Blue also helped set school records in the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 during his high school career and was inducted into the GHS Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008. He has 25 years of coaching experience.
