Meet Your Neighbor

Meet your neighbor Glen Boyd of La Harpe.

Glen was born about 7 miles southwest of La Harpe in La Crosse. He is the son of Walter and Olive Boyd. Glen was the second of their 5 children. He has two brothers and three sisters, one of his sisters in now deceased.

He attended school through 8th grade in the LaCrosse area at Forest Hill school.

He attended high school in La Harpe graduating in 1941 at the age of 17. Of his graduating class of 21 students, 8 classmates remain.

Glen says he was a "selective volunteer" who chose to serve in the United States Navy.

After training at Great Lakes Naval Station, Glen was sent to Champaign Urbana where he studied at the diesel mechanic school.

He served on the USS Weaver (DE-741) a Cannon-class destroyer escort, that was named in honor of Luther D. Weaver who had been killed during the raid on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. The destroyer escort served throughout the South Pacific as a part of 5th/3rd Fleet logistics group.

After his discharge from the Navy in March of 1946, Glen returned to the area and farmed with his dad.

In 1954, he took a job as a mail carrier for the Post Office in Burnside and Augusta, retiring after 28 years on the job. After retirement from the Postal Service he returned to farming.

In 1969, Glen married Esther Miller of Blandinsville. They have three children 1 son, Michael, who lives near LaCrosse and 2 daughters, Lana who lives in La Harpe and Jan who lives in Disco.

Glen is a member of the Masonic Lodge and the American Legion Post in La Harpe, as well as the VFW in Macomb.

In June of 2011 Glen participated in the Honor Flight.
