A 4:45 p.m. fire of unknown orgin in a barn that was soon to be demolished at the Steve and Michelle Giertz farm was destroyed Tuesday.
The fire spread to a machine shed that housed a new combine and fairly new planter along with other farm equipment which were totally destroyed.
Giertz and his hired hand were mowing nearby when a neighbor Matt Defenbaugh saw the barn on fire. They worked to get the combine out of the shed but were unsuccessful due to a dead battery and the fire overtaking the building.
A nearby garage was not hurt and the car inside was moved from the garage.
Seven fire departments responded to the fire.
