THANKSGIVING 2014

By Elaine Slater Reese (Spring Green, WI)

Say the word Thanksgiving, and what do you think is the first thing that enters the mind of most people? I would bet that it is just automatically the word turkey.

Of course, it has been an American tradition since the first Thanksgiving to cook the big bird.

We picture it on the large platter, crisp and a golden brown on the outside and moist and tender on the inside, and huge.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying that bird (unless, of course, you had happened to be the bird!)

However, the sad fact is that many of us never get past that fantastic meal. We eventually fall in bed, knowing we ate way too much.

We fall asleep never really taking time to reflect on our blessings and thanking our Creator for them. I am not sure if that in our lives there has ever been a time when the world was more messed up than it is now.

There appears to be chaos in almost every country. Values have changed dramatically. Disease and terror groups bring fear and confusion.

Throughout history we have seen horrible things happen but usually they take place in other countries. Now it appears the doors have opened for hideous battles to occur here.

We can no longer take things for granted as we have for years. We can no longer stick our heads in the sand. We must each study and be aware of what our country is doing - where it is doing it- and how it may affect each one of us in the future.

I challenge all of us to take paper and pen and for at least twenty minutes focus on what we have to be thankful for. No two lists will probably be the same.

If we don't truly give thanks, how can we expect to be continually blessed?
