On August 20, 2013 a regular meeting of the La Harpe Board of Education was held with the following members in attendance: Pres. Cindy Wear, Vice Pres. Nate Butler, Pam Campbell, Dustin Detherage, Bobi James, and Dave Mershon. Supt. Ryan Olson, Prin. Lila McKeown, and Board Sec.
Jeanne Clayton were also in attendance.
The board approved the following employments: Jason Finch as 7th/8th Grade Girls' Basketball Head Coach and Brian Covert as Part-time Custodian. The board approved minutes, payment of bills, and regular deletion of closed meeting recordings 18 months and older. The board set the date for the IASB Board Workshop for Sat., Sept. 7 at 8:00 a.m., and approved school bus routes, discussed and approved the preliminary budget, and heard Dr. Olson's update on Johnson Estate funds for the coming year.
Superintendent Olson's report included information about the upcoming Board Team Building Workshop, a recent Alliance Legislative Report, and State Supt. Koch's Back-to-School Webinar including information on the new Common Core Standards and the new type of student assessments beginning next year. Dr. Olson mentioned watching district numbers regarding a school lunch program for which we may become eligible. The board discussed sending a welcome letter to all staff, and continuing teacher presentations to the board this year. The board discussed mandated refresher training and new licensures for teachers and the new certification system being implemented by the State Board of Education. Dr. Olson will meet with the Policy Committee to review new updates to policy.
Principal McKeown presented current enrollments by class and district total. McKeown explained the preschool selection process according to the grant from which the bulk of the program is paid. McKeown recounted the activities of the first school day, and gave overviews of the County-wide teacher inservice with presenter Dr. Dale Henry, and the baseball-themed La Harpe Teacher Institute based on Dr. Henry's book, The Proverbial Cracker Jack: How to Get Out of the Box and Be the Prize.
