Meet Your Neighbor

by Joyce Wolf, The Quill

Meet your neighbor, Charlie Green.

Charlie Green was born in Monmouth and grew up in the rural Rozetta area. His parents were John L. and Esther O. Green.

He attended the Liberty one room school through 4th grade, and remembers Lucille Hogue was his teacher all four years. He then went to the Hazel Dell one room school for fifth and sixth grades.

The county then consolidated and all the students from the rural schools came to the larger, more modern Biggsville schools. Charlie went the rest of his six years to Biggsville and graduated from Biggsville High School in 1959.

While in high school he enjoyed four years of basketball, and before he turned 16, he played softball on the Jr. Sheriffs League.

In the summer between his Junior and Senior years, his brother Lovell and Dean Clark and Charlie drove to the west coast to visit some cousins---quite a road trip clear across the country! They stopped in Missoula, Montana one night near the University and enjoyed swimming in the school swimming pool.

They all agreed this would be a neat place to go to school. After graduation from Biggsville, that’s just what Charlie did. He attended the University of Montana then returned home to help his father and brother on the farm.

Out of the twenty people who graduated in Charlie’s high school class, thirteen have stayed in this area. Not many classes can say that- 65% !

Charlie has two brothers, Lovell (Mary Jane), also of rural route Rozetta and Jim Green in Burr Ridge and one sister Eunice Carner, rural route Kirkwood. Her husband Jim died in February 2011.

Charlie met his wife Judy (Costello) when he went to New Hampshire to visit his sister Eunice and Jim who were living there at the time. Jim was a pilot and knew Judy’s father through their interest in flying. ‘Someone’ was doing some matchmaking back then, and they set Judy and Charlie up for a blind date.

The rest is history, because the matchmaking worked! They have been married forty years on January 11th. .

Charlie and Judy have two sons. John is married to Deb (Defenbaugh) and they have two sons, Dylan 3, and Justin 1. Their first son, Carl is in heaven.

Dan is married to Kristi (Gunter) and they have two daughters, Emma 4, and Abby 1 ½.

Before settling down and having their family, Charlie and Judy vacationed in Banff and Glacier National Parks and enjoyed travelling out west.

When their boys were in 4th and 6th grades they all enjoyed a trip to Disney World.

Charlie is interested in family geneology and he and Judy traveled to Pennsylvania a few years ago and visited some courthouses and old cemeteries looking for names and dates of ancestors.

Charlie’s grandmother was not a ‘Green’, but she came from Green County, Pennsylvania and she married a Green – Charlie’s grandfather. One thing about studying geneology, is that it’s never finished.

Charlie has attended the Rozetta Baptist Church all his life and has been a Sunday School teacher, served as a deacon and is presently the moderator of the church.

In the past the Rozetta church had a men’s slow pitch baseball team and Charlie helped coach. The ball field was there on the church lawn.

Charlie is still farming with John and Dan and can’t see any retirement in his future.

When you enjoy so much what you’re doing, there’s no reason to change. He does really enjoy the grandkids and watching them grow and it’s so nice to have them all so close.
