Meet Your Neighbor

by Misty Huston/The Quill

Meet your neighbor, Kathy Brownell, who resides in rural Gladstone, right behind the South Henderson Church, with her husband Jim of 8 years.

Kathy is employed at Weirs apple orchard in the fall and works as a substitute teacher during the school year. She was previously a speech therapist for 25 years.

Kathy was born in Burlington, Iowa and raised at Carthage Lake in Henderson County. She graduated from Union High School and continued her education at Northeast Missouri State, now known as Truman State.

Husband,ÊJim, has been employed as a machinist for 2 1/2 years at Dresser-Rand in West Burlington, Iowa.

She is the daughter of the late Homer and Irene Stevenson.

Kathy has one sister, June Galbraith, who resides in rural Gladstone and says she is related to all the Stevensons, Fords and Galbraiths in Henderson County.

A year ago, Kathy and Jim were victims of the great flood which destroyed their home, at Carthage Lake, and many of their belongings. It is only by the grace of God that they were not injured, as they had to be rescued from the levee after it broke that devastating morning.

After living in Burlington, Iowa with close friends for 2 months they found a home to buy, right behind the South Henderson Church, where they were married. They are settling in well and love their new home which is the perfect place for raising their goats.

Her favorite hobby is raising Boer goats. She enjoys taking care of them, playing with them and watching them grow. They are trying to re-establish their herd after the flood so they can breed and sell them again. They currently own 18 goats.

Thankfully they were able to take them all to a farm in Danville, Iowa, where they had purchased them, before the flood so they didn't lose any of them. However, they did lose some of their fencing, sheds, etc. for taking care of them and are gradually working on building the needed facilities to expand their herd. All of their goats are named after Royalty, Gods and Goddesses.

Kathy is pictured above with Bourbon, one of her bottle babies, that she has hand raised since her birth.

Another one of her favorite activities is gardening.
