The La Harpe School Board held a regular meeting Tuesday night, November 18th in the school district library.
Board members in attendance were Dan Horton, Cindy Wear, Ricky Johnson, Pam Campbell, Rex Huston, and Deanna Stambaugh. Also present were Supt. Jo Campbell, Prin. Lila McKeown, Jeanne Clayton and Arlynn Hitz.
Principal McKeown reported that the girls' basketball seasons are winding down with good success. 7th/8th boys had their first basketball game Nov. 7th. 5th/6th boys will soon begin their practices.
Election Day, Mr. Porter's Jr Hi Social Studies class conducted a school-wide mock election. Students were registered to vote prior to the election and went through the voting process filling out ballots and inserting them into a ballot box.
The Jr Hi music students presented various songs, dances, skits and instrumentals with a Halloween theme at the annual Variety Show on Nov. 5th. The highlight of the evening was a choreographed dance production of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" complete with singing, smoke machine, and lighting effects.
Nov 15th, Alex Ourth and Megan Lord were privileged to accompany Mrs. Mencel to St. Ambrose University to attend an Honor Band Festival.
La Harpe School Honors Group, sponsored by Mrs. Mencel, recently added new members. The Faculty Council approved students for admission based on the criteria of a 3.25 minimum GPA, and a written essay. Newly approved members are Abby Adkisson, Taylor Blythe, Fisher Boyle, Paige Bray, Devin Lionberger, and Elyce Trout. Existing Honors group members are Bradee Campbell, Rachel Clayton, Brittni Finley, Lauren Genck, Jacob Howd, Holly Jones, Megan Lord, Holly McDowell, Alex Ourth, and Frannie Tate. Honors Group is helping collect 500 canned food items in a school-wide food drive for Hunger and Homeless Week.
La Harpe District gave appreciation for the PTO helping purchase paper and photography supplies for classroom projects and the replacement of a laminating machine.
The board reviewed their risk management plan, worked on the preliminary tax levy, and approved Krista Willdrick as part-time teacher's aide.
Invitations to the school Thanksgiving Dinner on Nov 20th were received by the board and they enjoyed refreshments brought in honor of School Board Members Day. Approved minutes are on the school website at laharpeeagles.com. The next regularly scheduled board meeting will be held on Dec. 16, 2008.
