Illini West Continues To Improve School

April 11, 2008

The Illini West School Board has been reviewing various strategic plans to improve upon the first year at Illini West High School.

The board has agreed to hire three additional teachers for the 2008-2009 school year.

The consensus is that an additional teacher in the core subjects of Mathematics, Science and Reading will alleviate the large class sizes and allow for more individualized attention for students.

Because of the staff increase and the general overcrowding of the building, three additional modular buildings with a capacity of six classrooms will be added to the IWHS campus.

A newly formed handbook review committee will meet within the next few weeks to discuss rules and regulations at Illini West and how we can better meet the needs of our students.

Parents are encouraged to share suggestions with the Illini West administration with regards to changes that could promote student success.

The Illini West board also approved the purchase of two school buses and two activity buses to meet the ever increasing transportation needs of our involved student body.

To improve communication with parents the board approved the purchase of the SchoolReach Instant Parent Contact service.

The SchoolReach program will allow the school to send messages to parents with regards to emergencies or attendance and general school reminders by phoning hundreds of numbers in a matter of minutes.

The Vocational Agriculture Advisory Committee is investigating possible avenues of funding for a district greenhouse to enhance student involvement in Ag programs such as Horticulture.

The Charger Girls' Basketball program will be participating in the University of Tennessee basketball camp in June. Attendance is voluntary and players will not be penalized if unable to attend.

The next board meeting will be April 30th at 7:00 p.m.
