Meet Your Neighbor

by Betty Jo McConnell

Meet your neighbor, Marie Atkins, from the La Harpe Nursing Home.

Marie was born at home, northwest of Stronghurst on the family farm, on February 1, 1907.

She attended Stronghurst Grade School and Roseville High School then went on to Monmouth nursing training graduating in 1925.

Marie was the floor supervisor at Monmouth Hospital for 10 years and loved nursing and enjoyed the people she took care of."

On July 6, 1934, she married Edward Lawrence Atkins raising three children, Margaret, Jean, and Edward (Tommy) Atkins.

Marie misses her husband and children but is blessed with 8 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 33 great-great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-great grandchild.

She turned 100 in February and said it would of been nice to have a television and the microwave when she was young.

One of Marie's highlights of her life was when her son, Tommy, took her to Warsaw, Poland with him on a business trip.

Marie took her first car ride when she was in the 1st grade. She said, "Charlie Davis was going to check on his farm and asked me to go. After I got into the car I wondered to myself, "What was going to keep me in the car because the car did not have any doors."

Marie keeps very busy at the nursing home. She enjoys bingo and rummy cubes. Before coming to the nursing home her hobbies included embroidery and hooking rugs.
