Moment In History

During the Civil War in this section of the state, quite a large number of men were members of that treasonable organization known as the "Knights of the Golden Circle" (Biased opinion of author of 1911 history).

A number of soldiers who were at home on furlough learned who some of the members were and they caught them and compelled them to take the oath of allegiance to the Government.

This greatly enraged the members of that organization scattered through the area and finally on one Sabbath, a large company of disloyal men met at Monmouth, heavily armed, and marched on Oquawka on horseback, arriving here in the forenoon.
