On Stephen Douglas' visit a great effort was put forth by his respective partisans to make their meeting a success.
While Douglas was in Oquawka, a hickory pole was raised by local Democrats across the street from the court house thus demonstrating their loyalty to "Old Hickory," Andrew Jackson.
On the occasion of Lincoln's speech a very elaborate parade was held in which were many elaborate floats, among them being a representation of Lincoln's old log cabin.
Girls, beautifully dress-ed, were very much in evidence adding charm to the scene and political excitement was at its highest pitch.
