There are many people in our midst who bring joy to others in the community throughout the years, and I would like to take time this Christmas to mention just one such person.
Vera Ruth White of Stronghurst was a volunteer at Oak Lane Nursing Home when my mother was living there her last years, and I appreciated it so much that Vera Ruth was at Oak Lane during most of her stay.
She would come and read stories, newspaper articles and stories to the residents. She knew that my mother had always been an avid reader so she would make sure someone would go to my mother's room and ask my mom to join their reading time. My mother with her Alzheimers progressing, didn't always act like she was listening to Vera Ruth's articles but it didn't matter to Vera. She knew she was enjoying the stories in her own way. That may seem a little thing, but to me it was such a comfort to know someone would care that much for my mother to read a devotional, a newspaper article, or a poem from the Ideals Magazine. |
December 13th, was one year since mother's passing, and memories of her and the caring people in our community grow more fonder. Thank you Vera for giving your gift of reading and bringing joy to a little part of our world.
Merry Christmas!
