What a wonderful relaxing five days my husband and I had at Lonnie and Brenda Brent's fishing lodge in northern Minnesota.
Working most of the night to meet deadline always leaves me with tense muscles, a lack of sunshine and fresh air, so the trip to Driftwood Lodge Resort on a lake near a national park was a welcome vacation even though I do not fish.
We were met by our son Matt who is working at the lodge. We purchased a fishing license at the small convenience store then moved our gear into a cabin that overlooked the lake and boat dock. The cabin was fully equipped with furniture, dishes, stainless steel and cast iron pans, fans, a grill outside and was exceptionally nice. The cool evenings were perfect for sleeping. Matt arranged for a guided fishing trip Thursday and we were pulling fish out of the lake in no time. Pulling in walleye was great fun.
Before noon, we were taken to a hidden hotel in the park for lunch. Friday evening and Saturday morning Lonnie took us fishing at some beautiful spots pointing out Eagles, a family of ducks, telling stories of wildlife.
In the evening Matt's girlfriend, Shelby, who accompanied us, enjoyed the chipmunks that climbed onto her lap to eat peanuts.
Matt took us across the lake to see the rock garden a man had created. He cooked fresh walleye one evening and we grilled steak outside the next. We returned home Sunday and I noticed all my tense muscles were gone.
In two weeks it is bear season, then the fall colors follow. You must plan a trip.
