The Hancock-Henderson Quill, Inc.
By Coach Will Bavery
It took a little extra time, but the Heat finally put the stop on the Havana Ducks. With the Heat leading 20-12, the defense stopped the Duck's quarterback on two sneaks from the one yard line to end the game.
The Heat had jumped out quickly on two Andy Chockley touchdowns to lead 12-0 with only six minutes gone in the first quarter. Missed assignments and penalties allowed the Ducks to tie the game at 12-12 and send the game into overtime.
In the overtime we first hammered off tackle with Andy Chockley to set up the run by Drue Waterman. Drue went in untouched from 6 yards out. We came back with the same play for the two point conversion. That set up was the heroic stand for defense.
Andy Chockley again led the Heat ground attack with 175 yards. The defense turned in some good play also, with Dalton Chandler, Cody Lane, John Livermore, Dan Crum, and Jason Sams leading the tackle charts. The real down side of our play was the 90 yards in penalties that kept us from blowing the game open earlier. We have to become more mentally disciplined.
It was really nice playing on the Havana field with its lush grass. They have ample practice space and do not have to use their field for anything but their high school and junior high games. The Havana field could be one of the best fields in the state.
This week we return home, for Homecoming, to take on the West Prairie-La Harpe Cyclones. The Cyclones are coming off a 61-19 victory over Athens, and feature a very quick set of running backs. The Heat must play good defense and eliminate the penalties in order to play with the Cyclones.
