Moment In History

SPANISH AMERICAN WAR IN THE PHILIPPINES: Only Charles Brooks and Charles Huss were wounded of all the Henderson County boys that were sent to the Philippines.

In the battle of Purinia Ford the Filipinos fired on the American troops with Mauser rifles and discharged three cannon loaded with scrap iron and then fled.

Charles Huss was shot through the body by a Mauser bullet, the bullet passing through his stomach and coming out at his back.

In about two weeks after, he insisted in getting out of the hospital and went with his regiment to Mindanao.

Corporal Brooks was terribly wounded in the right groin by a piece of scrap iron from a cannon. He was confined to the hospital for nine months but finally recovered and returned to Oquawka.
