Gladstone was originally called Sagetown by some as Gideon Sage was an early land owner in the area, Lynn by others and Oquawka Junction by others(railroad stop).
Sagetown was platted in 1856 and in 1881 the question of incorporation was voted on with a majority in favor; thus, it was incorporated as the village of Gladstone, thought to be a more modern sounding name.
