West Central Girls State Track Meet - Brokaw Earns 1st in 1600 Run

Three West Central Girls Track team members competed at the IHSA Girl's State Track meet over the weekend.

The meet was held on the Eastern Illinois University campus in Charleston.

Theresa Brokaw competed in the 3200m and 1600m runs, Rachele Jack in the 100m Hurdles and Miriam Rutzen in the high jump.

Despite valiant efforts, Miriam and Rachele were eliminated in the preliminary rounds of competition.

Theresa won her heat of the 1600m preliminary round on Friday with a time of 5:10.8. On

Saturday she competed in section 2 of the 3200m finals and placed second with a time of 11:05.32 (a new West Central record).

After an hour and a half rest, Theresa competed in the 1600m final. Keeping her head and her pace, Theresa started the race at the back of the pack and steadily picked off the other runners until finally passing Katelyn Bastert for the win in the last 100 meters.

Theresa secured her state championship with a time of 5:02.65 (another school record). Great job Theresa!

All three girls have been invited to compete at the Peoria Journal Star Honor Roll meet on Tuesday, May 23rd. This meet will conclude the West Central Girl's Track season.
