Moment In History

Nothing is certain in this world and especially true when it comes to inheritance or perceived inheritance. George M. Foote of the Stronghurst area came to this county as a young man and by hard work and skillful business ability accumulated a large fortune, most of it in land. He believed that every second generation could either make or keep money and that is believed to be the reason for his making his will as he did.

On Jan.12, 1894 he died. By his will he disinherited his own children and gave a tract of land to certain children of his son and other tracts to his two daughters' children with the provision that the executors control and manage the assets until the youngest child became of age.

Then it was to be sold and the proceeds divided. All the rest of his large fortune amounting to over $100,000 (worth $2,0520508.50 today) he gave to a favorite grandson, the oldest child of his son to be delivered over to him when he reached the age of twenty-one.
